Position / Summary

Performs all types of industrial welding work. Prepares various surfaces for welding by grinding, washing, or other means as necessary.  The job description is to be used as a guideline only and may not incorporate all functions of the job; education and experience outlines are ideal qualifications/assets but do not necessarily reflect the requirements of the position.

 Essential Job Functions include the following, but are not limited to:

  • Lay out, position, and secure parts and assemblies according to specifications, using straightedge, combination square, calipers, and ruler
  • Tack-weld or weld components and assemblies, using electric, gas, arc, or other welding equipment
  • Inspect grooves, angles, or gap allowances, using micrometer, caliper, and precision measuring instruments
  • Remove rough spots from materials, using portable grinder, sander, hand file, or scraper
  • Weld components in flat, vertical, or overhead positions
  • Interpret engineering drawings and blueprints to fit all fabrication for welding
  • Heats, forms, and dresses metal parts, using hand tools, torch, or arc welding equipment.
  • Ignites torch and adjusts valves, amperage, or voltage to obtain desired flame or arc.
  • Analyzes engineering drawings and specifications to plan layout, assembly, and welding operations.
  • Conducts duties through the use of appropriate jigs, fixtures, hand tools, machines and test equipment
  • Determines required equipment and welding method, applying knowledge of metallurgy, geometry, and welding techniques.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Education and/or Experience

A minimum of 3 years of experience as structural welder.  Must be able to interpret blueprints and weld symbols

Language Skills

Reads and comprehends simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos; Presents information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees effectively.

Mathematical Skills

Adds, subtracts, multiplies, and divides in all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals; Computes rate, ratio, and percent; Draws and interprets bar graphs. Ability to accurately use and read a tape measure and compare measurements to spec sheet to determine compliance

Reasoning Ability

Applies common sense understanding to carry out detailed, but uninvolved, written or oral instructions; Deals with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

Physical Requirements of Job

o     Sedentary Work: Lift 10 pounds maximum. Occasionally carry small objects. Occasional walking.

o     Light Work: Lift 20 pounds maximum. Frequently lift/carry up to 10 pounds. Frequent walking.

o     Medium Work: Lift 50 pounds maximum. Frequently lift/carry up to 25 pounds. Unrestricted walking and standing.

o     Heavy Work: Lift up to 100 pounds maximum. Frequently lift/carry 50 pounds. Unrestricted walking and standing.

o     Very Heavy: Lift in excess of 100 pounds. Frequently lift/carry 50 pounds. Unrestricted walking and standing.
